Last week, the global industry celebrated World Leather Day, highlighting the heritage and sustainability of one of the world's oldest crafts. At Free Space, we are proud to contribute to the future of this sector through the TAN-TOM project.
Leather is a material of extraordinary complexity. To ensure the highest quality standards, we need to look beyond what the eye can see.
The TAN-TOM Vision
Funded by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (MIMIT), the TAN-TOM project is developing a pioneering "tomographic" inspection system. This technology allows for the non-invasive analysis of leather during the manufacturing process, combining:
  • Multispectral optical systems
  • Electromagnetic tomographic acquisition
  • AI-based data processing
This project is the result of a strong synergy between industry leaders, research institutions, and technical consultants. In the context of the project, we provide specialist consulting expertise and have designed a dedicated measurement unit capable of monitoring the moisture content of leather, ensuring quality control throughout the production process.
By leveraging our expertise in RF technologies and advanced electromagnetics, we correlate electromagnetic signal responses with moisture levels, enabling accurate, non-invasive diagnostics.
Through this contribution, we are helping the Italian leather supply chain set a new global benchmark for quality assurance and technological diagnostic systems.
